When you are a parent, life is full of surprises. Some surprises can be considered “good” while others are not so good.
Kids making you breakfast in bed could be considered a good surprise, depending on the age of the child and their cooking skills. However, finding a wall mural with permanent marker in the garage is not a surprise that you want to find.
There is a way that you can protect you and your kids from bad ideas that seemed good at the time. On your security smartphone app, there are unexpected activity notifications. These notifications work by learning your everyday behavior patterns and letting you know when something out of the ordinary is going on.
You may ask yourself, how do I set up this smart home feature? The answer is nothing. The Insights Engine works proactively as part of the smart home security platform that powers your home. Over time, however, you can train it with simple ‘useful/not useful’ feedback that the Insights Engine will adapt to.
You have the option to ‘pause’ notifications for 24 hours if a sudden change in schedule occurs or if you are home sick for the day.
These notifications can be triggered by different sensors around your home, including contact sensors on doors and windows, or motion sensors.
Five areas of your home where an Unexpected Activity alert can save the day:
1. External doors
On weekday mornings, your exterior doors will see a lot of activity as people leave for school or work. However, on weekend mornings your exterior doors may not see activity until 10:00a.m. If you receive a notification that the front door was opened at 6:30 on a Saturday morning, you may find that your five-year-old is exploring the front yard. This Unexpected Activity notification will let you know exactly where your child wandered off to and when.
2. Laundry area
Kids have an unnerving curiosity with the laundry room. It’s something about those giant machines that make kids want to play in them. A motion detector in the laundry room can let you know if there’s unexpected activity around your washer or dryer.
3. Medicine cabinet
Young children seem to love the challenge of climbing on counters and exploring your home’s most hazardous areas.
You can place a contact sensor on your medicine cabinet to know instantly if it’s accessed outside of your normal routine.
4. Top of stairs
One of parent’s worst fears in a two-story house is their child falling down the stairs. Whether it is a bad dream or a stomach ache, every child will sometimes get up and wander in the night.
If their bedroom happens to be near the stairs, being alerted in time can help you avert the danger of a sleepy child taking a fall.
5. Door to the garage
The garage can be the most alluring area of your house for children due to the endless number of tools and shelves that fill the space.
While you are often in the garage working on projects on the weekend, a weekday alert from your internal garage door’s contact sensor can indicate that youngsters are trying to get their hands on your tools or paint.
