A security system is there to protect you and your possessions when a burglar targets your property. The burglar may actually target the security system itself during the process.

A crash and smash attack is a burglary tactic that focuses on your home’s security panel or keypad. The burglar will try destroying the alarm before it sounds.

How does a crash and smash attack work?

The “crash” part of “crash and smash” is when the burglar gains entry to the residence or business. They try to quickly locate and “smash” the security panel or keypad before the alarm sounds.

The objective is to take advantage of the security system’s time delay. Most security systems give the homeowner 30 and 45 seconds to disarm the system before sounding the alarm and generating an emergency signal.

Unlike other smart home technology, our security systems have proactive safeguards to defeat the attack, beginning before the “smash” even happens.

Safeguard 1: Crash and Smash Protection

The crash and smash protection ensures that your security system will signal for help even if it can’t send the signal itself.  This can be done through the cloud security technology.

When your security system starts its countdown of 30 or 45 seconds, the alarm system anticipates either a ‘disarm’ or ‘alarm’ event. If your panel suddenly goes offline during the countdown, the panel will immediately send an emergency signal to the monitoring station.

The signaling takes place on Alarm.com’s secure cloud platform, which ensures that the signal is effectively transmitted in the event of your security panel being destroyed.

Safeguard 2: Professional Security Monitoring

When the monitoring station receives a crash and smash alert, they quickly alert your local police department and send help to your home.

You will also receive a smartphone alert as well, to make you aware of what is going on if you are not home. The burglar will not be aware that the emergency notification was sent to the monitoring station, until the police arrive.
